Experience of harvest, postharvest, and normalization of fruits and vegetables in a developing country.

ABSTRACT :

 

Colombia is an agricultural country with a variety of microclimates making it ideally suited to producing a wide range of commodities. However, various factors including production technologies, culture, politics, consumption capacity, agricultural structure and credit availability have resulted in an underdeveloped fruit and vegetable sector. This paper looks at the current situation before going on to present the case of Carulla, a Colombian supermarket chain, which has invested in the fruit and vegetable sector providing services such as technical assistance, personal credit, infrastructure and quality standards. As a result the fruit and vegetable market has made significant advances in efficiency over the past few years.
