Effect of ultraviolet radiation on control of diseases for short-term storage of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.).

ABSTRACT :

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation was evaluated as a thermal treatment for the control of disease causing wound pathogens on potatoes (cv. Superior) for short-term postharvest storage (3 months). Four UV radiation dose levels (7.5x104, 10x104, 12.5x104 and 15x104 erg/mm2), and 3 incubation levels each for fungi Fusarium solani (0, 1 and 2 d) and bacteria Erwinia carotovora var. carotovora (0, 6 and 12 h) were used in this investigation. The UV radiation reduced the infection of both the pathogens at all the incubation levels. The highest UV dose level of 15x104 erg/mm2 was found to be the most effective. Disease control was more effective in the case of UV treatment on Fusarium solani than on Erwinia carotovora var. carotovora. Visual observations of potato quality showed that there were no significant changes in tuber quality, such as firmness and colour. [1 erg = 0.1 mu J]
