ABSTRACT :
A systems approach developed in Georgia, USA for handling fresh fruits and vegetables was implemented in the State of Veracruz, Mexico. Mangoes were identified as a pilot product by surveying selected growers, packers, shippers, and other businesses in Veracruz. Collaborative studies on postharvest handling were carried out between the Universities of Veracruz and Georgia. Further studies emphasized Soft Systems Methodologies (SSM), a tool for providing structure to diverse opinions about problem situations and for organizing discussion on changes needed and how to take action. Discussion on existing postharvest systems for mangoes, including missing activities determined necessary and 2 proposed organizational structures for new extension systems, is given. The same process can be applied to helping actual groups of extension workers, growers, packers, and handlers to develop systems.
