ABSTRACT :
The effects of preharvest spraying of pomegranate (cv. Manfalouty) fruits with CaCl2 (2%) or GA3 (50 ppm) followed by postharvest dipping in CaCl2 (1%) on physical and chemical changes during storage in the cold (3-5 deg C and 85% RH) or at room temperature (20-30 deg and 50-60% RH) were investigated. Fruits stored well for 12 and 2 weeks in cold storage and at room temperature, respectively. Weight loss increased slightly and gradually with storage period. Treatment with GA3 + postharvest treatment with CaCl2 reduced weight loss the most. The intensity of fruit red colour and TSS did not change with storage period although there was a slight tendency for these values to increase during the later period of storage. There was a tendency for total acidity and sugar contents to slightly decrease towards the end of the storage period. The intensity of juice colour and the total soluble solids and sugar contents improved when fruits were treated pre- and post-harvest with CaCl2.
