Effects of on-tree and postharvest UV irradiation on coloration in sweet cherry fruit.

ABSTRACT :

The effects of supplemental ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of sweet cherry fruits before harvest or after harvest on fruit skin coloration (anthocyanin optical density) were studied. Irradiation of the fruits with UV-A (320-400 nm) when they were colouring on the tree increased skin coloration. This effect was more marked in branches receiving weak sunshine than in those receiving strong sunshine. UV irradiation had no effect on TSS content or titratable acidity in the fruit juice. Postharvest irradiation with UV also increased skin coloration; irradiation with UV-A was more effective than that with UV-B (280-320 nm), which often burned the fruit skin surface. Fruit weight loss was low during UV-A irradiation and short-term storage after treatment.
