Effect of increasing nitrogen fertilizer rates on cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill) cv. Concha Lisa fruits in refrigerated storage.

ABSTRACT :

Thirty-year-old cherimoya cv. Concha Lisa trees were supplied with 1.84, 3.68, 4.14, 5.52 or 6.72 kg N (as urea)/tree, split between 3 applications (in Dec., Feb. and July). After harvest, the fruits were packed in polystyrene trays covered with PVC film and stored at 7 plus or minus 0.5 deg C and 90% RH. After storage for 11, 22 or 33 days fruits were transferred to room temperature and analysed after 7, 6 and 5 days, respectively. Application rates of 4.14-6.72 kg N/tree resulted in the lowest soluble solids contents and fruit pulp firmness values, and the highest titratable acidity values. With increasing duration of storage, titratable acidity and pulp firmness decreased, while soluble solids content increased. The results suggest that N application at or above 4.14 kg N/tree impairs storage quality and organoleptic properties after storage.
