Probability of bruising - an alternate measure of bruise susceptibility.

 

Logistic curves were used to determine the relationship between impact energy and the likelihood of a certain bruise size occurring for 3 apple cultivars (Granny Smith, Royal Gala and Braeburn). This approach takes into account the natural variability of bruising within any given crop population in determining the bruise susceptibility. The effect of cultivar, time of harvest and impact surface curvature of apples on the slope of the logistic curve was examined. It was found that cultivar had the greatest effect on the slope of the curve.
