Effect of individual plastic films on the ripening control of avocado fruits "Hass".

 

Avocado fruits cv. Hass, harvested at the stage of physiological maturity (ie. texture = 0.0-0.6 mm; colour index = 0.4) were wrapped with plastic film made of polyolefin 10 mu m thick. Effects on ripening control both in cold storage (5 plus or minus 1 deg C) and ripening conditions (20 plus or minus 1 deg C) were studied. Changes in respiration, ethylene evolution, texture, colour index, weight losses and number of days to ripen were evaluated. Results show that normal evolution of both respiration and ethylene occurs at 20 deg C for wrapped and unwrapped fruits, but a 4-d delay of the climacteric peak was observed in those fruits wrapped in plastic film. Wrapped fruits also showed a considerable reduction in weight and texture losses after 4 weeks of cold storage as well as after 15 d in ripening-promoting conditions.
