An experimental automatic baby corn separating system was developed and evaluated. The system consists of 3 main mechanisms for cutting, orientating and separating. A rotary cutter cuts the ear tail and a linear cutter opens the husk top surface. The orientating mechanism reverses the opened surface downward and the separating mechanism separates the baby corn by applying a force to break the joint connecting the baby corn and the branch. All system functions are automatic and pneumatic, except the baby corn loading and the removal of husk from the separating mechanism. Cutting and orientating performance exceeded 90%. Separating performance exceeded 80%, the main limiting effect being the morphological characteristics of the baby corn ear. The separated baby corn which was accepted as raw material for canned baby corn production was 57.6%. Total damage was 29.0%, the major cause of which was ovary removal.
