An experimental on-line computer controlled apple grader using acoustic resonance sensing is described. A stiffness coefficient based on the second resonant frequency, which corresponds to the principal mode of vibration of the flesh of the fruit, and the mass of the apple, offers a useful criterion for sorting. Engineering problems are discussed and some results of the performance testing are given. The experimental machine was capable of sorting apples into 3 grades, hard, firm and soft, with less than 4% error.
