Shocks and vibrations experienced by fruit in bulk bins both in the orchard and during transportation to the packing house were quantified using an Environmental Data Recorder (EDR). The EDR is designed for recording transient accelerations measured in 3 independent sensing axes. The range of vibrations was investigated by taking the bin on 2 journeys: a typical journey by a careful driver along a relatively smooth route; a journey along a much rougher route with a driver instructed to take less care. Two types of bin were monitored during road transportation to investigate the effect of bin type on vibrations: a new bin and an older, poorly maintained bin. The level of horizontal vibrations at the top of the older bin were over 30 times the levels at the base of the bin, but the new bin experienced similar levels of vibrations both at the top and the base. Vibration measurements were made for trucks with steel leaf suspensions and air suspensions.
