Influence of chemicals on vase life of gladiolus.

 

In a study on the effect of adding MgSO4, ZnSO4, FeSO4, AgNO3, NiCl2, CoCl2 and Al2(SO4)3 at either 500 or 1000 ppm, and sucrose at either 2 or 4% to the vase water for gladiolus, spike longevity was greatest and the period of outstanding quality (>3 flowers open) was longest with 500 ppm NiCl2, but it delayed flower opening. The other treatments also gave results superior to that in the control (water). In general, treatments with FeSO4 and AgNO3 hastened flower opening, but increased spike longevity compared with the control. It is suggested that NiCl2 at 500 ppm be used in the vase solution for preserving quality and increasing longevity of gladiolus spikes.
