The role of open florets in flower bud opening of Dendrobium cultivars Asuka White, Jew Yuay Tew, Madame Vipa, Mary Mak, Pompadour and Youppadeewan held in a solution containing 225 mg 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate/litre, 30 mg AgNO3/litre and 4% glucose was studied at ambient temperature. The results showed that flower bud opening declined the more open florets were removed. Bagging of open florets also reduced flower bud opening but was less effective than removal of open florets. Inflorescences bearing both open florets and flower buds had higher rates of water uptake than those where open florets were removed or bagged. The role of open florets in maximizing flower bud opening in Dendrobium was discussed.
