Ultrastructure of cells from ligulae of cut gerbera inflorescences (cv. Red Marleen) was studied after 8 days of vase life in distilled water or preservative solution (2.5% sucrose + 150 p.p.m. 8-HQS + 200 p.p.m. KCl) and compared with fresh inflorescences. Cells from ligulae of inflorescences held in preservative solution maintained their ultrastructure adequately compared with that of fresh inflorescences. Cells from ligulae of inflorescences held in distilled water had a low cytoplasm content, small mitochondria and elongated chromoplasts. Dead cells with plasmolysed and completely degraded content were also identified. It was concluded that the ultrastructure of cells from ligulae of inflorescences held in distilled water was in a very advanced phase of degradation after 8 days of vase life in spite of the fact that external symptoms were not apparent.
