Different quantities of electrolytes are emitted by cut flowers into solution during vase life. The exchange of substances between cut flowers and the vase solution depends on the species, the concentration of solution and its composition. In distilled water, Freesia flowers emitted 0.33 micro S g-1 ml-1 day-1 and chrysanthemum 6 times more (1.92 micro S g-1 ml-1 day-1). By increasing the sucrose concentration in preservative solution to 3%, the passage of electrolytes from the cut flower into the solution was stimulated. A silver thiosulfate pulse for 24 h inhibited this process in cut Freesia flowers compared with 8-HQC.
