Kensington Pride, the most widely cultivated mango cultivar in Australia, suffers from a serious sapburn problem which necessitates special postharvest treatment. Dipping fruits in DC Tron NR at 100 micro l/litre for 30-60 s gave better control than similar rates of other similar highly refined paraffinic oils, viz. Caltex Summer Spray Oil, Caltex Lovis Oil and Mobil Mulrex Summer Spray Oil, and did not cause fruit blotchiness or off-flavour. Chlorsan (an alkaline dish-washing powder) at 0.1 or 1%, Biogreen (a neutral dish-washing liquid) at 0.1 or 0.5% and Agral (a non-ionic adjuvant) at 100 micro l/litre or higher rates in other trials did not control sapburn. In another trial, DC Tron and Bioshield oil significantly reduced sapburn at 200 micro l/litre without causing fruit blotchiness. Spraying fruits in crates with DC Tron resulted in very poor coverage and poor sapburn control. However, DC Tron at 750 micro l/litre used as a non-recirculating, agitated spray on a conveyor system gave excel
lent control of sapburn on a large commercial scale with negligible sap contamination of machinery and equipment.
