A study was conducted on the impact of the Lab to Land programme in two villages in Himachal Pradesh state, India (Huria in Kullu district and Nagwain in Mandi district). Knowledge and adoption scores for the 21 families participating in the study were calculated for 6 parameters: establishment of plantation; fertilizer application; plant protection measures; cultural management practices; training and pruning system; and pre and postharvest technology. The scores reveal that apple growers had appreciable knowledge of recommended management practices (Knowledge Index (KI) = 83.55) as well as in techniques of establishment of plantation (KI = 80.75). Amongst the adoption scores, that of cultural management practices ranked highest (Adoption Index (AI) = 74.55) followed by establishment of plantation (AI = 70.04). Adoption level was low for pre and postharvest technology (AI = 40.44) and requires attention. While the majority (71%) of beneficiaries of the Lab to Land Programme expressed no problem
regarding the subject matter of the programme, 76% felt that the frequency, duration, time and venue of training programme was inadequate.
