The effects of canopy light intensity and spectral quality on fruit colour and shelf-life of long English cucumber (cv. Mustang) were studied in a greenhouse. Fruit colour was measured non-destructively by video imaging and shelf life by visual inspection of incipient yellowing. In summer, the lower the light intensity on cucumber fruits the shorter the shelf-life when stored at 13 deg C. In the summer and autumn, fruits which were wrapped with a red (R) filter were greener than fruits wrapped in a far-red (FR) filter. In the winter, when high pressure sodium lamps were used to supplement the natural light, both R and FR filters produced fruits of similar colour and shelf-life. In the spring, R filters produced fruits with a longer shelf-life than FR filters although fruit colour was similar.
