Labelled Zn, applied to apple cv. Braeburn trees in mid-Sep., was taken up by the leaves within 3 days of spraying. There was very little decline in leaf Zn content up to 12 days after application, indicating that it is not a mobile element. Since there was very little translocation of Zn out of the leaves, most of it was lost in the leaf litter. In the following spring only a small amount of the Zn in spurs was from the spray. When different sources of Zn were sprayed on Golden Delicious trees the results were similar, with very little of the Zn appearing in the flower clusters the following spring. It was concluded that postharvest sprays of Zn were not effective in increasing Zn levels in flower buds and new tissues in early spring.
