Contributions to the study of the pathogenic mycoflora producing the rot of some root vegetables after harvesting.

The infection rate and biology of pathogenic fungi found at harvest and at 30-d intervals during a 150-d period of storage on carrot, root celery and parsnip are outlined. The species considered were Alternaria dauci, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Stemphylium radicinum [A. radicina], most frequently associated with carrot, Phoma apiicola on root celery and Rhizopus stolonifer on parsnip. A direct correlation was found between the temp. and growth in vitro of the isolated micromycetes. All the fungi were inhibited by temp. of 1 deg C, except for R. stolonifer, which showed weak growth after 5 d of storage at 1 deg , a very near opt. temp. recommended for storage of root vegetables.
