A study was conducted to establish variations in sweet potato feathery mottle potyvirus concn during storage and determine the best time to index the storage roots to be used for planting. Sweet potato plants from 2 clones were inoculated 20, 75 and 120 d after planting out by shoot grafting with plant material affected with chlorotic dwarf. Storage roots were identified, weighed at harvest and stored at 15-17 deg C, RH 80-90%. SPFMV concn was evaluated at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the storage period by DAS-ELISA. The variation pattern of SPFMV concn in storage roots from plants infected at different times was similar to that of the chronically infected ones. Generally, it was determined that since the highest absorbance values were reached at the end of the storage period, this is the best time for indexing roots by DAS-ELISA for SPFMV. Only the storage roots from the earliest infected plants (20 d post planting) showed viral concn similar to those of the chronically infect
ed plants.
