An in vitro test to evaluate the fungitoxic activity of T. capitatus essential oil was carried out by observing the growth of 2 postharvest pathogens, Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium italicum, on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates inoculated with 10 micro l of a spore suspension. The in vivo efficacy of these compounds was investigated on peel discs of cv. Valencia Late orange fruits inoculated with the same quantity of spore suspension. The essential oil inhibited the growth of both B. cinerea and P. italicum. The MICs were 12 p.p.m. for B. cinerea and 25 p.p.m. for P. italicum, and the fungicidal concentrations were 25 and 50 p.p.m., respectively. SEM observations indicated that the mycelia of both fungi were severely injured by the application of T. capitatus essential oil.
