The Philippines is the second largest producer of coconuts in the world, but its plantations are facing numerous problems and yields are on the decline. The main causes are: aging palms, the use of unsuitable land, poor nutrition, mediocre harvesting and postharvest techniques, felling of young palms and drought due to intensive deforestation. Steps such as better choices of cultivars and hybrids, fertilizer application, cover crops and drought control (cropping techniques, land improvement and irrigation) are recommended to prevent yields falling. As part of the coconut rehabilitation programme, the government is offering financial incentives to encourage smallholder development.
