Polyamine and ACC contents in the mesocarp of Japanese apricot (Prunus mume) fruits peaked in the early fruit development stage, then decreased rapidly and changed little until fruits was harvested. The content of spermidine in the mesocarp sharply declined during the postharvest period at 45 deg C, but the spermine and putrescine contents did not change. ACC content and ethylene evolution peaked 3-4 days after harvest. Exogenous polyamines, applied to fruits 20 days before normal harvest, delayed fruit drop and postharvest ethylene evolution compared with untreated controls.
