Frankliniella occidentalis was found in Chile during summer 1995 causing severe losses on peaches, nectarines and table grapes. The damage to infested fruits is described. Preharvest treatments on peaches and nectarines were carried out with systemic and contact insecticides. Methomyl at 800 g a.i./ha performed better than carbaryl, fenvalerate and mineral oil. The best postharvest treatment to protect foliage from continuing thrips feeding injury was the application of methamidophos 60% SC at 1.5 g a.i./ha. The geographical distribution of this pest is discussed.
