The effect of several postharvest chemical treatments in combination on Ponkan [Citrus reticulata] fruit decay during storage were studied in 1991 and 1992. The chemicals used were Befran [iminoctadine] (5% liquor), TBZ [thiabendazole] (45% powder), Rovral [iprodione] (20%), imazalil (50% liquor), Topsin [thiophanate-methyl] (20%) and 2,4-D (powder). Fruits were dipped in various treatment combinations for 1 minute then packed and stored for up to 150 days. The best treatments were 500 ppm imazalil + 200 ppm Rovral + 200 ppm 2,4-D and 2000 ppm Rovral + 667 ppm Topsin + 200 ppm 2,4-D. These combinations could reduce costs by 20-45%, when compared with the sole use of expensive preservatives (such as imazalil, Befran and TBZ).
