Alstroemeria flowers harvested when primary flowers were opening were treated with 60 ppm Chrysal or 60, 90 or 120 ppm Cloro, applied in solution to the stem base, or 50, 100 or 150 ppm benzyladenine (BA) or GA3 applied foliarly. Foliarly treated flowers were held in distilled water, as were the untreated controls. The stems were kept at a temperature of 23 plus or minus 3 deg C. The variables L*, a*, b*, chroma and hue were measured in flowers and leaves according to the CIELAB system in 2, 7 and 14 days after the application of the products. Discoloration of the flowers did not lower overall quality even though there were differences between treatment means. BA treatments were most effective in maintaining leaf colour in the middle and distal portion of the floral stem. The limiting variable in the postharvest storage of Alstroemeria flowers was the abscission of flower parts.
