Effect of harvest management and pulsing treatment on the postharvest life of gladiolus flowers.

Gladiolus flower spikes (of a local white cultivar) were harvested at 09.00 or 14.00 h then kept in or out of water until 18.00 h. To simulate the various stages of transport and marketing, all flower spikes were kept out of water from 18.00 h until 08.00 h the next day, placed in water until 12.00 h, then kept out of water until 14.00 h, at which time they were placed in water containing preservative solution. Vase life was counted as starting at this point. The best results (in terms of spike weight, water uptake, percentages of open and senescent flowers, etc.) were obtained with flowers harvested in the afternoon and kept in water until 18.00 h. In another experiment, flowers harvested in the morning and kept in water until treatment were pulsed with 0-40% sucrose solution for 12 or 24 h before being transferred to vase solution. The best results (parameters as before) were obtained with solutions of >10% sucrose. There were no significant differences between the 12- and 24-h treatments.
