The growth and flowering of Leucospermum and Serruria pot plant cultivars were evaluated during production and for their postharvest performance. Four production systems were used, which were based on different types of cuttings. Plants were evaluated for their rooting ability and the time required to produce flowering pot plants. Of the 3 large, single-flower cultivars of Leucospermum, Ballerina was the best, with 90-100% of the plants producing acceptable flowering pot plants, depending on the production system. Next were Tango 42 and L. tottum, producing 40-100 and 10-100% acceptable flowering pot plants, respectively. With the small multi-headed species L. mundii and L. oleifolium [L. oleaefolium], acceptable flowering pot plants were produced only after 17 months of cultivation. Interspecific F1 hybrids of S. florida x S. rosea rooted well (>88%) in January-February and 20-85% of the plants produced acceptable flowering pot plants within 6 months of propagation. Leucospermum cv. Ballerina p
ot plants could be cold-stored in darkness for 4 or 8 days without reducing quality and they continued to flower under home conditions for 3 weeks. L. oleifolium plants flowered for 17 days but suffered from blackening of the buds and some leaf discoloration, while L. mundii flowered for 7-10 days with slight leaf discoloration. Serruria pot plants were best stored at 4 deg C and 90% RH. Inflorescences of the cultivars Bridesmaid and Fairy lasted for 30-55 days, producing long-lasting flowering pot plants.
