Diploid bananas (apple bananas) have been transported by air freight because they have a short shelf-life. The possibility of extending shelf-life, to allow transporting by sea, was investigated by combining optimum harvest maturity and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). Packing with polyethylene film and storing at 14 deg C gave a shelf-life similar to that obtained commercially for Cavendish bananas (Musa AAA), viz. 21-28 days. However, if the film was insufficiently permeable (200 gauge), increased CO2 concentrations produced toxic injuries after 3 weeks. Harvesting nearer maturity produced a shorter shelf-life but the fruits had a better flavour when ripened.
