In Italy, heavy rainfall and persistent high humidity in the summer of 1995 created conditions favourable for the establishment of various fungal agents of rots on peaches and nectarines, especially in the Emilia-Romagna area. Monilinia laxa was the most common fungal agent of rot, while Rhizopus nigricans [R. stolonifer], M. fructigena, Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea were less frequent agents. Fungicides recommended for use against rots before harvest reduced the number of infected fruits by only 50-60%. Experimental studies have shown that a better level of control is achieved if the same fungicides are used postharvest, but this method of application is not authorized in Italy for health and safety reasons.
