This study: (1) estimates the marketable and marketed surplus of ginger in Himachal Pradesh state, India, and describes the marketing channels and marketing functionaries involved; (2) examines losses during marketing, particularly during storage and transportation; and (3) identifies problems involved in ginger marketing, particularly in relation to storage and transportation, and suggests policy measures to overcome these. Data were collected from 98 farmers from 13 villages in Sirmaur district and from a sample of 54 traders (20 village traders, 18 primary wholesalers and 16 retailers) selected from three major markets (Dadahu, Sataun and Solan). The main problems faced by ginger growers are the prevalence of the arthiya system of ginger marketing, the limited number of procurement centres for ginger, non-existence of cooperative societies and low price. Other problems experienced by growers include: plant disease, lack of technical knowledge, and costly transportation of ginger.
