In trials begun in 1991-92 at Tarquinia to examine whether irrigating in the previous year (after harvest) could boost yields of early cultivars, 6-year-old trees of early peach cv. Maycrest and early nectarine cv. Maria Emilia on PS.B2 rootstocks were irrigated to replace 0, 50, 75 or 100% of evapotranspiration losses in 1991 or 0, 75, 100 or 150% of evapotranspiration losses in 1992. Trees were sprinkler-irrigated every 3 days following fruit harvest. Trees were assessed in Spring 1992 and 1993. In 1992, there were no differences between treatments. In 1993, replacing 75% of evapotranspiration losses gave the greatest number of flower buds and fruits set per m of shoot. Average fruit weight increased as irrigation volume increased. It is suggested that the effects of applying smaller proportions of the moisture lost by evapotranspiration should be examined.
