Influence of exposure to light and cultivation system on resistance to Phoma foveata and Fusarium solani var. coeruleum in potato tubers - a pilot study.

Effects of exposure to light during the storage period on the resistance of 3 genotypes of organically cultivated potato tubers to gangrene (P. foveata [P. exigua var. foveata]) and dry rot (F. solani var. coeruleum) were assessed twice in 3 varieties in 1994. In addition, influences of the cultivation systems used (organic vs. conventional) were also studied. After a pre-infection period of exposure to light for 5 d, the gangrene index in tubers of cultivars Bintje and Ukama (tested in Jan.) and King Edward and Ulama (tested in Apr.) was significantly lower than that of control tubers. The dry rot index was not significantly influenced by light treatment, except in Ukama in Apr., when it was 7% higher in tubers exposed to light. In samples from organically cultivated tubers, tested in Jan., the gangrene index was significantly lower in all varieties compared with conventionally cultivated ones. However, there was no such difference in Apr. tests. The dry rot index was lower in organically culti

vated Bintje (both test periods) and King Edward (Apr.) compared with tubers from the conventional system. The possible role of glycoalkaloids in resistance to gangrene after exposure to light is discussed.
