Zingiber mioga is a relatively new crop in New Zealand, where it is beginning to be grown for export of its subterranean flower buds, which are produced in autumn. The cultural methods used (including soil and climate requirements, shade, propagation, planting, pest and diseases, weed control, fertilizers, mulching, growth retardation and harvesting) and marketing (including grading standards and transport) are discussed. Production tends to be on a larger scale than traditional Japanese production.
