Onion and garlic are both important Indian horticultural crops with an extensive internal market and, in the case of onion, a significant export niche, over 70% of foreign exchange earnings among fresh vegetables. After examining the production of these crops, this paper deals briefly with export (quantity, destination and variety) and the varying quality requirements of foreign markets. Constraints in onion export are dealt with: non-availability of export-worthy stocks; greater internal demand and high ruling prices; unawareness about proper postharvest practices and quality; price-fixing; packing materials; inadequate transport facilities; non-availability of adequate storage and handling facilities at ports and lack of suitable vessels; and inadequate market intelligence. Strategies to overcome these problems include: production and distribution of quality seeds; development of cultivars which are resistant to disease, pest and stress as well as development of biological control measures; di
versification into yellow hybrids for the spring market in Europe and Japan; and development of bigger bulblet varieties. For both onions and garlic, the training of traders and farmers is essential, as is the creation of adequate curing and storage facilities and the improvement of packing and port facilities. It is concluded that India's current share of exports could be developed if short- and long-term planning were to sort out problems at various stages of the process from farmer to consumer.
