Development of Australian East Coast species for floriculture in both domestic and export markets.

The native flower industry has been identified as a new industry with significant potential to develop its domestic and export markets based on Australia's unique native flora. The industry currently suffers from a lack of coordination and organization. Major competitors in the world market include Israel, New Zealand, the USA and southern African countries. Israel and New Zealand in particular have a demonstrated quality focus which has allowed them to develop significant export markets. Australian growers are handicapped by major deficiencies in basic production information and postharvest handling. They have not always adopted advanced technology used by their competitors, particularly in respect of packaging and quality control. Undue haste in commercializing too many species before their production requirements were fully understood has also been blamed for some of the industry's problems. This plan for the development of East Coast species for floriculture focuses on three selected species

: Blandfordia, Waratah and Christmas bush. The aim is to identify production and marketing constraints and solve them, discussing and promoting the outcomes with an industry group representing various links in the marketing chain, in order to develop total commercial production programmes for the industry.
