Cherry rootstocks and summer pruning.

Results from the NC-140 Regional Rootstock Trials are presented. Trees of cv. Bing on 2 rootstocks from Belgium, GM.79 and GM.61/1, had better cumulative yields than trees on Mazzard, but fruit size was very sensitive to crop load and was smaller than on Mazzard. Tree size on the Belgian rootstocks, although smaller than on Mazzard, was more variable. The most promising rootstocks were those from Geissen, Germany (GI.148/1, GI.196/4 and GI. 195/1) which, although not dwarfing, were very precocious and productive. Fruit size was not unduly affected by crop load. Summer pruning trials begun in 1991 had little effect on tree size, but in 1993 trees that had received summer pruning had yields that were almost 50% higher than those of the control; preharvest pruning was better than postharvest pruning, and removal of one-third of the current year's growth was better than removal of two-thirds.
