The vase life of cut flowers of Gladiolus gandavensis cv. Spic and Span was extended following single treatments of either 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (100 p.p.m.), BA at 5, 10 or 20 p.p.m., GA (10 p.p.m.), 7% ethanol, silver thiosulfate (1 mM), spermidine at 100 or 1000 p.p.m., or kinetin (20 p.p.m.). The best treatment for extending vase life and quality was pretreatment of flowers for 30 min in silver thiosulfate, followed by pulsing for 20 h in a solution containing sucrose (40%) + 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (200 p.p.m.) + BA (20 p.p.m.). Vase life was extended by 32%, and flower quality was improved in terms of flower diameter, percentage flowering, FW, water uptake and anthocyanin content. Treated flowers also exhibited reduced ethylene production and a reduced respiration rate.
