To demonstrate if differences in the postharvest transpiration coefficient of radish cultivars are genetically fixed, the postharvest transpiratory patterns of 2 cultivars under different sowing dates and N application rates were evaluated. Radishes were sown in Germany in April, June, August, October and January 1993/94. The fertilizer trial was carried out for the first 3 of these sowing dates only. Pots were fertilized with 0.3, 1.2 or 2.4 g N/pot. A lower fresh weight in both, leaf and hypocotyl, a lower leaf/hypocotyl weight ratio and a higher transpiration coefficient were observed with later sowing dates. As N rates increased, leaves had a higher fresh weight, but hypocotyl weight was not affected. N fertilization did not have a clear influence on radish transpiration during postharvest. The initial cultivar differences in postharvest transpiration were not maintained for the different sowing dates and applied N rates. Therefore it was concluded that differences between cultivars in the p
ostharvest transpiration coefficient are not genetically fixed or if they are genetically predisposed they are easily influenced and/or altered by agroclimatic conditions.
