Resistance of freckled bananas to anthracnose.

Freckle disease (Phyllosticta musarum) of banana is characterized by pin-head sized, restricted and isolated spots on the fruit peel. The infections that take place when the bunch is young do not expand during fruit ripening. The incidence of anthracnose (Colletotrichum musae) was significantly less in freckled fruits var. 'Ambul' (Mysoor, AAB group) than those without freckles. C. musae could, however, be isolated more frequently from the surface-sterilised peel of freckled fruits than non-freckled fruits. Artificial inoculation of freckled bananas with C. musae also resulted in less anthracnose lesions during ripening when compared with non-freckled fruits. Conc. methanolic extracts of the peel of freckled, unripe banana, bioassayed on TLC plates using conidia of Cladosporium cladosporioides or C. musae, produced 3 prominent antifungal zones. Similar extracts from healthy banana peels did not show antifungal activity. The antifungal activity was greater in severely freckled bananas than those

with moderate or low freckle infection. Freckle-infected fruits continued to show antifungal activity during ripening. The accumulation of antifungal activity appeared to be making the banana fruits resistant to anthracnose disease.
