Pesticide residues were surveyed in a range of fresh fruit and vegetables during 1992-94 by NSW Agriculture and the Sydney Market Authority, Australia. The survey aimed to test for residues of up to 25 pesticides including organochlorines (6), organophosphates (13), synthetic pyrethroids (2), carbamates (1), miscellaneous fungicides (2) and dithiocarbamate fungicides. Residues above the maximum residue limit (MRL) were traced back to the grower and appropriate action was taken. Approximately 50% of vegetable samples were also tested for residues of cadmium. In the 1st 2 years of testing, 390 fruit and 667 vegetable samples were subjected to over 18 500 tests for pesticide residues. Some 98.9% of samples contained either no detectable residues or residues within legal limits. Of the 304 vegetable samples tested for cadmium, 1.6% contained a residue exceeding the maximum permitted concentration (MPC). These trends were consistent with a survey carried out between 1989-92. Of 501 samples tested for
dithiocarbamate fungicides during the 2nd year, 6.4% contained residues exceeding or suspected of exceeding the MRL. A number of problems including the 'generic' test for dithiocarbamate compounds and the existence of different MRL's for different parent chemicals complicated this issue.
