Approx. 20 roots of each of 2 radish cultivars (Oshin and Long White) were harvested from the remains of a commercial crop in New South Wales in early August 1994. The roots were approx. 90-100 days old at harvest. Histological studies showed pithiness to be associated with the breakdown of parenchyma cells in the stele, away from the vascular tissue. Differences in susceptibility to pithiness between cultivars and the effects of growing season conditions are discussed.
