A new fruit rot disease of pears.

During a survey of postharvest diseases in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, India, China pears (Pyrus communis) with unusual decay symptoms were observed in 5-10% of fruits in cold storage facilities. Isolations were made from the margins of diseased areas of fruit and the pathogen was identified as Phomopsis perniciosa. Pathogenicity was confirmed and the symptoms are described. This is the first report of P. perniciosa causing fruit rot of pears.
