The senescence of broccoli florets (which have a relatively short storage life) and Arabidopsis thaliana leaves (studied because of the availability of ethylene-insensitive mutants) is discussed with reference to research carried out by the authors and their associates. In both cases, ethylene and cytokinins have been found to have important roles.
