Rice postproduction systems were surveyed in three regions of Zhejiang province (Jinhua, Jiaxing and Ningbo) and evaluated in terms of cost, efficiency, grain quantity loss and grain quality indexes. Seven operations were analysed (harvesting, threshing, cleaning, drying, storage, transport and processing). Data are tabulated on the costs of various operations and their efficiency. The efficiency of postproduction systems was found to be low due partly to a lack of equipment. The average loss of grain from harvesting to storage and processing was as high as 15%, equivalent to 600 000 million kg of rice lost during postproduction. Recommendations include increasing the use of simple equipment (such as storage cabinets), storing rice collectively in some areas, and improving rice mills and cleaning and winnowing machines.
