Maturity measurements were made on fruits of the apple cv. Cox's Orange Pippin clone Queen Cox on MM.106 in 6 orchards of 5- to 10-year-old trees between 1983 and 1993. Fruits were samples twice weekly from mid-Aug. until harvest and fruit weight, internal ethylene concentration, firmness and starch content were measured. The seasonal average of either internal ethylene concentration or 70% starch correlated well with the estimated predicted harvest date. Although there was generally good agreement between ethylene, starch and fruit firmness, no single parameter measured provided a reliable guide to optimum harvest date. It appeared from the data that the optimum harvest date of Queen Cox could only be predicted 7 days before that date, using a combination of these parameters. The predicted harvesting date using the formulae of Luton and Hamer [see Journal of Horticultural Science (1983) 58, 37-44] provided a good guide in 8 of the 11 seasons.
