The economic importance, damage and epidemiology of diseases of stone fruits after harvest are described. The causal agents include Monilinia laxa, M. fructigena, Botrytis cinerea, Rhizopus stolonifer, Penicillium expansum, Penicillium spp., Alternaria alternata, Alternaria spp., Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium herbarum, Stemphylium spp., Geotrichum spp., Sclerotinia spp., Mucor piriformis, Coryneum carpophilum and Fusarium spp. Techniques for preventing fungal diseases developing after harvest are described. Field studies conducted in Italy on peach and nectarine revealed that is was possible to contain infections of M. laxa on postharvest fruits by intervening with appropriate fungicides in the phase immediately prior to harvest. Preharvest treatments with tebuconazole gave a good level of control of the pathogen on fruits after harvest.
