Household fuel use and food consumption: relationship and seasonal effects in Central Malawi.

The associations between household fuelwood use and household food preparation and consumption were analysed in the Ntcheu District in the Central Region of Malawi, an area where there was a moderate fuelwood scarcity. Data was collected in the rainy (preharvest) season, a period of relatively low food availability; and the postharvest season, a period of sufficient food availability. 120 households participated in a household food consumption and fuel use study. In both seasons, the amount of household fuel use was positively associated with total household energy intake. In the rainy season, a major determinant of fuel use was food availability, whereas in the post-harvest season fuelwood availability was a determinant of food intake. In both seasons a high fuel use was significantly associated with a high energy intake from cooked cereals. In the postharvest season there was a significant association between high fuel use and a high energy intake from other foods, such as beans. In the rainy

season beans were rarely eaten and the intake from foods other than cereals was mainly from vegetables. As vegetables contributed little to energy intake, there was no correlation between fuel use and intake from other foods. It is concluded that, in Malawi, food consumption can be affected by seasonal variation in food and fuel availability. The low consumption of foods other than cereals is of special concern.
