Injury-free vibrational stress during storage of Myrica rubra fruits promoted an increase in membrane permeability, and decreases in superoxide dismutase activity and spermine content, all associated with bayberry senescence. Spermine synthesis increased while ethylene production decreased significantly during the post-vibration storage period, suggesting a possible anti-vibration stress mechanism. However, during the later post-vibration storage period, spermine content decreased while putrescine content increased, and ethylene was produced at a higher rate compared with the control fruits, showing that vibration ultimately accelerated the senescence process.
